Hecho en Milledgeville, GA: Paintings by Valerie Aranda

Hecho En Milledgeville, GA:
Paintings by Valerie Aranda
May 4-25th

Valerie Aranda-Artist Bio

Valerie Aranda, a painter, muralist and educator from Arizona, teaches art at Georgia College. She received her BFA in painting from Arizona State University and her MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego. In describing what motivates her work, Aranda says: “Social justice issues have been central to my personal art, community-based projects, and in the classes I teach. With community-based murals, the focus is on empowering community groups through participatory art-making processes resulting in imagery that reaffirms the experiences and goals of that community group.”

In her paintings and drawings her artwork centers on her Chicana identity and the experience of moving to “the south” from California. “Transplanting myself from the southwest to the south has been both reaffirming and confounding… through my paintings, I explore the intersection of shifting cultures, environments and experiences that at times seem very familiar, but are so different. The paradox of these experiences, cultures and environments are a source of inspiration for me.” “Drawing from my Mexican roots, I examine the negotiating between differing worldviews within the U.S. and across the Americas and my use of culturally affirming imagery is a decolonizing strategy.”

Aranda’s community-based projects include murals in, Milledgeville, GA; Memphis, TN; Athens, GA; San Antonio, TX; San Diego, CA; and Phoenix, AZ; additionally, she served as an artist in residence with the California Arts Council Artist in Residence program and with San Anto Cultural Arts as their muralist in residence.

She has exhibited her paintings in national venues including: Promega Center, Madison, WI; El Museo Alameda, San Antonio, TX; The National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, IL; Plaza de la Raza, Los Angeles, CA; El Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego, CA; La Posada Cultural Center, San Jose, CA; the Carter Art Center in Kansas City, MO; Spruill Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Douglasville Cultural Arts, GA. Aranda’s professional work also includes nine years of service as a board member with the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures who is dedicated to the promotion, advancement, development, and cultivation of the Latino arts field.

Fired Works Brings 60 Master Potters to Central City Park

The 13th Annual Fired Works Regional Ceramics Exhibition and Sale is scheduled for April 14-22, 2018 in Macon’s historic Central City Park. The 2018 show will feature North Georgia’s Ester Lipscomb and 60 master potters from Georgia and the Southeast, with thousands of original works. Fired Works began as a local pottery show and has grown to become the largest exhibit of functional and sculptural pottery in the state of Georgia, and this year, more new events will be added to the agenda.

A Preview Party will be held Friday, April 13 with food, fun, and an exclusive meet and greet with the artists. Attendees also receive the first chance to purchase work before the exhibit opens to the public on Saturday. The nine-day exhibit and sale will again include free clay workshops for kids, adult classes and artist talks.

The mission of Fired Works is to help Southeastern ceramic artists and potters show and sell their work. Fired Works promotes the rich history of pottery in Georgia and its connection to the history of the Ocmulgee River Region. People have made pottery along the banks of the Ocmulgee River for thousands of years and local potters continue this tradition today. In fact, the oldest piece of stamped pottery ever found in North America was found at the Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon.

Macon Arts Alliance Welcomes Resident Artists for
Mill Hill Community Arts Center in Fort Hawkins
Macon Arts Alliance is pleased to announce the selection of a new resident artist team who will lead and program the new community arts asset in Macon’s first neighborhood. The Mill Hill Community Arts Center Kick-Start Residency is a 6-month residency program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and John S. & James L. Knight Foundation.  Forrest Sincoff Gard and his wife, Jeni Hansen-Gard, bring their combined artistic talents to launch new programming and provide management support for the Mill Hill Community Arts Center in Ft. Hawkins. The residents will also coordinate event rentals to ensure that the 7,000-square foot center can maximize community engagement to become a working neighborhood asset soon after opening. The facility features a large performance stage with sound and lighting, an auditorium (that once housed a full size basketball court), a small gallery, a professional kitchen, a technology toolshed and a large outdoor area, ideal for hosting festivals and artist markets.
Macon Arts Alliance is fortunate to engage two professional artists who applied as a team. The couple will reside in one of the newly renovated artist cottages located on Schell Avenue, just behind the arts center. Forrest and Jeni met at the University of Florida in the ceramics studio in 2010. In 2014, they helped found the Socially Engaged Craft Collective, a craft and social practice organization. Forrest is a ceramic artist and the associate Editor of Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated magazines. Jeni is a potter and a community-based artist. The artists currently live in Macon, with recent projects at Wesleyan College.
“We are really excited to join the Mill Hill community and bring new life to the Community Arts Center. As current residents of Macon, we love this town, and this residency will allow us the opportunity to contribute to the development of a city we call home. We are eager to work collaboratively with the community as we work towards building a sustainable future. As community-oriented ceramic artists we are eager to begin our residency where engaging with the community is part of our job! ” – Forrest Sincoff Gard and Jeni Hansen Gard

Maureen Persons Artist Statement

Life as an artist is amazing and for me diverse. I think of the toddler learning to walk and soon to run and then to ride a bike. The baby cautiously steps forward to the beckoning yet retreating parent. The goal, the finish line awaits, almost there! Art for me feels just like this! I study, paint, create, and just about the time I think that I am having a ” ta da” moment it is time to kick up the game level. There is much to learn and often I am lured down an unexpected path.

Currently I am working to paint more rapidly and in a more direct and fresh decisive “alla prima” fashion. It is challenging with live models and particularly difficult outdoors with the elements and rapidly changing light. I love the outdoors, but I am not a real camper type! These outdoor paintings called “plein air” are a great resource for studio paintings. These studies are small and direct and finished on sight. I generally like to have time to refine and study a work, not to mention I really enjoy a big canvas! The direct outdoor painting and the alla prima painting I am currently doing with live models is exciting and enriching to my studio work. Just as the curious, determined child reaches for the next challenge, I am always chasing the next quiver in my art experience pack.

One of the greatest things about being an artist is learning something new every day. Painting for me is an exciting process of trying to convey a part of myself and what I have taken from my surroundings. I love working with color, trying to control it, but at the same time giving it the freedom of bringing everything together in a painting. The most fun is to start a painting and get totally lost in it! It’s the greatest! I’m thankful for this creative vein that runs through me and connects me with artists all over the world and most of all connects me with the greatest Creator of all.
I always want to improve in my work. That is the biggest motivator of all.
I have been fortunate to take classes from Libby Tolley, Kevin Macpherson, Kim English, Dee Beard Dean, Larry Moore.and Perry Austin. I have also been in workshops with Robert Johnson and Dan Gerhertz.
I have a small studio in the woods behind my house. It is my place to commune with the outdoors, reflect and to get into the creative part of my personality. Painting requires lots of work. I am so thankful for a husband who supports my endeavors in the art world.

Macon Arts Alliance Hosts Open House of Blues

Macon Arts Alliance Hosts Open House of Blues in East Macon

Macon, GA—Macon Arts Alliance Executive Director, Jan Beeland, will welcome community partners, project funders, vendors, citizens and local stakeholders to the freshly painted front porch of the Mill Hill Community Arts Center on Monday, March 5th. Fort Hawkins, Macon’s historic first neighborhood, has a new neighborhood asset thanks to a collaboration of visionaries. The 7,000-sq. ft. 1920s building has been transformed into the Mill Hill Community Arts Center, a gathering place for learning, listening and sharing artistic experiences.

In October 2014, the Knight Foundation invited a group of interested community leaders to visit Bradenton, Florida. They saw firsthand how the small town was utilizing the arts as a catalyst to bring vibrancy back to a blighted neighborhood. The very next day, Mayor Robert Reichert suggested that the group consider East Macon. Soon after that tour, Macon Arts Alliance and the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority formed a partnership.

The success of the project would depend on the acceptance of the neighborhood. So, public meetings were held in Fort Hawkins to get input, to engage participation and most importantly, to listen. After receiving a positive reception from the neighborhood, they agreed to move forward with plans to continue efforts to bring vibrancy back to the blighted neighborhood.

In 2015, the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority purchased the Old Bibb Mill Manufacturing Auditorium with plans to develop the Mill Hill Community Arts Center.

The Community Foundation of Central Georgia received a challenge grant from an anonymous donor to leverage additional support to restore the 1920s facility. Six Macon-Bibb County Commissioners rallied to accept the challenge and allocated blight funds to the restoration effort. The Peyton Anderson Foundation and the Grassmann Trust joined the effort and completed the building fund.

Architect Robert Beeland visualized the plans and Piedmont Construction handled the renovation of the historic structure. Sam Kitchens and a team from Macon-Bibb Parks and Beautification are working on the green space. Mill Hill Project Director JR Olive stated, “It has been such a rewarding experience to see this transformation.  The neighborhood has a new place to connect, conspire and create.”

The public is invited to attend the Open House of Blues today at 5 PM at the Mill Hill Community Arts center located at 213 Clinton Street in East Macon. Following brief remarks and a ribbon cutting, guests will be invited inside for tours, barbecue and live blues from the Robert Lee Coleman Band, presented with support from Gallery West and volunteer hosts from AARP.

Knight Foundation Invests $537,000 in Macon

MACON, Ga. – Feb. 7, 2018 – Knight Foundation will invest $537,000 in nine Macon arts organizations to further strengthen the arts ecosystem, offering opportunities for local artists while supporting arts organizations in their efforts to provide accessible and engaging programming, frequently through the integration of technology.

To help individual artists grow, Knight support will provide them with tools they need, from 3-D printers and other high-tech tools to kilns for ceramic arts. In addition, emerging Southern artists will be included in more exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, and will be able to rent studio or performance space from Ampersand Guild downtown.

Arts organizations also are making their programming accessible to residents and visitors alike – including the Tubman Museum’s Pan African Festival, which will expand in a new location and invite another Macon tradition, Praisefest, to become part of the event. Bragg Jam will continue to expand by offering more year-round programming of national and local musical acts.

“The arts bring us together like little else, helping to form those shared experiences that build community,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation. “To create vibrancy, cities need a healthy cultural system with organizations that provide a high-level of programming that is accessible, and spaces for individual artists – potters, jazz musicians, painters and writers – to grow and experiment.”

567 Center for Renewal ($20,000) – To develop the careers of Macon artists by building a ceramics and pottery studio where professional artists can rent fully-equipped studio space, take workshops and exhibit their work

Jazz Association of Macon ($10,000) – To increase community access to live jazz performances by bringing in an artist-in-residence and having him or her perform at the association’s Riverdale Festival and at local schools

Macon Arts Alliance ($75,000) –  To help artists develop their skills by creating a “Tech Toolshed,” a space providing access to an array of tools, from saws to software, designed to inspire and strengthen Macon’s creative class

Tubman African American Museum ($75,000) – To expand African Diaspora arts programming in Macon by helping the 2018 Pan African Festival grow into a new larger location in Central City Park, and join with another signature Macon event, PraiseFest.

In addition, four arts organizations will receive multiple-year funding to help expand their capacity to provide high-quality programming:

Otis Redding Foundation ($75,000) – To expand access to music education for Macon’s youth through support for the foundation’s year-round classes

Ampersand Guild ($50,000) – To support the work of individual artists in Macon through the guild, which provides studio, performance space and professional development in downtown Macon

Museum of Art and Sciences ($150,000) – To provide more professional development opportunities for emerging Southern artists by providing funding for exhibitions and for acquiring their work

Bragg Jam ($75,000) – To increase community access to year-round musical performances by local and national acts by helping Bragg Jam expand programming and grow from a volunteer-led organization to one run by professional staff

Connections Arts & Culture Festival Call for Artists

The Connections Arts and Culture Festival will take place April 21, 2018 at the Mill Hill Community Arts Center and seeks a featured artist.

Connections is putting out a call for artists beginning January 23 and closing February 23, 2018.  The selected artist will receive $1000 to serve as featured artist at the festival.

The 2nd Connections art festival is partially supported by a seed grant by the Downtown Challenge, and primarily serves residents of the East Macon neighborhood adjacent to downtown. The all-day arts festival will be free and open to the public, and will include: tables for artists, arts groups, and community organizations; performances by community arts groups as well as headliners; arts activities; food vendors; and other entertainment, demonstrations and activities. Our goal is to have over 2,000 people participate in this community event. Our belief is that a process of healing long-standing divisions in Macon can be brought about through inclusive arts and cultural activities. We have confidence that the arts can bring people together and creative community building is a key aspect of our mission. The arts community benefits by having an arts festival to showcase their work, and to show their work to communities not typically included in the downtown art gallery scene. Mill Hill/Fort Hawkins are neighborhoods fractured by long standing economic problems. Part of neighborhood revitalization is community building, and this event will literally bring the community together. It will also provide a venue for entertainment and creative expression in a neighborhood that has scarce opportunities for either.
