Macon Arts Alliance to feature Mark Ballard’s first official showing in 25 years

Macon, Ga — Macon Arts Alliance is proud to present “The Mark of the Pencil” August 7-29 at the Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance. The exhibit features a collection of original colored pencil drawings by Macon artist Mark Ballard. The first official show of artwork in more than 25 years, “Mark of the Pencil” will feature all-new work by the acclaimed local artist.

“As the number of my drawings grew and since I haven’t had an official showing of my artwork in 25 years, I felt the time had come for me to share this year’s work,” said Ballard. “I’m calling it ‘The Mark of a Pencil’ and I’m very excited about it.”

Though Mark is known for his work as a successful artist, designer and entertainer, he only recently returned to colored pencil as a medium of choice. The decision was a result of teaching drawing classes for the first time.

“At the constant urging of friends and fans to teach drawing classes, I finally gave in and began teaching in January. I must admit I was a little nervous. I have demonstrated how to create many things over the years on television, the Internet and at seminars, but never taught art.”

At the age of eight, Mark studied under the skilled instruction of the talented Houser Smith. His love for art blossomed, and he continued studying art through high school, eventually earning a full-scholarship to the Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD.) Before taking on his new role as teacher, Ballard decided to revisit his earlier training. He wants to instill the fundamentals of drawing in his students.

“I went into my studio and thumbed through years and years of my drawing assignments. As I designed the curriculum, something happened to me that I hadn’t expected. A fire for drawing was once again ignited within me.

In the 1980s, Ballard created several commissioned pieces in colored pencil, but rarely since then has he worked in the medium. Teaching drawing led him back.

“With each week of my classes, I couldn’t wait to create new drawings. All this year, I have woken up each morning with an overwhelming desire to draw. To say I’ve become obsessed is an understatement.”

“The Mark of a Pencil: A Collection of Original Colored Pencil Drawings by Macon Artist Mark Ballard” will be on display at the Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance from August 7-29.
An opening reception will be held on First Friday, August 7 from 5-8 p.m. The opening is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served
